Routes to the Register

Why Should I Register?

The UKPHR was established following calls by employers and employees to create a standards framework in which specialists in Public Health can adhere to. By registering the UKPHR state that you are competent to practice in your professional area of expertise. The primary reason for the UKPHR is for the protection of the general public, although the registrant may gain the benefit of improved access to employment, as well as professional accreditation.

The UKPHR is currently working on establishing a framework for registering Public Health Practitioners. For more details on this and other recent developments visit the Register developments page.

+ The Standard Route

+ Retrospective Portfolio Assessment

From the outset it was acknowledged that for those people, already in specialist posts, who have not had suitable access to a recognised training programme, an alternative route would be required. For this reason the Register Board pioneered the use of Retrospective Portfolio Assessment. In the early years of the Register, while specialist training programmes have only relatively recently become available, most registrants applied via this route. For defined areas of specialist public health, this remains the predominant route to registration. This process provides recognition of competence for those working at senior (consultant/specialist) level at the time of registration. Since there are no recognised training programmes for defined specialists, it is envisaged that specialists in defined areas will continue to apply mainly via the Retrospective Portfolio Assessment route.
